Mayor Nutter has just endorsed Alan Butkovitz in his race to keep his job as city controller. It is the first endorsement Nutter has offered in a local election since become mayor. He did not rule out weighing into the district attorney's race or those for judge.

Black Clergy endorses Butkovitz for controller

City Controller Alan Butkovitz gained the support yesterday of the Black Clergy of Philadelphia and Vicinity in his campaign for a second term. Butkovitz, facing John Braxton and Brett Mandel in the May 19 Democratic primary, was praised by the organization of 450 churches for an open-door policy and his work on minority contracting and utility subsidies for poor residents.

City controller Alan Butkovitz (above) says it allows better prioritization of responses: "It's scandalous that out of 220,000 calls a year, that the fire commissioner says 80 percent of them really should not be getting rescue squad response when, as a result of that, people are dying.
