The combined meltdown on Wall Street and the ensuing economic crisis that has gripped our nation after eight long years of disastrous Republican Party rule in the White House, has forced Philadelphia to confront near-crippling deficits -- while trying to maintain essential police, fire and emergency medical services.

I am running for re-election as City Controller because I want to continue fighting for the people of Philadelphia and saving taxpayers' money by eliminating waste, fraud and mismanagement in city government - while offering new and innovative solutions to some of our most pressing problems.

As City Controller for the last three years, I tripled the number of annual performance audits conducted by my office from two to six, for an overall total of 31 performance and special audits that have identified over $413 million in savings and new revenues for the city. 

To address the budget-crushing pension crisis, I developed a long-range plan that will save Philadelphia more than $200 million over the next five years. The Philadelphia Daily News called my plan “innovative” and said it “is a classic example of the kind of market expertise that we need in a controller.”

The Philadelphia Inquirer endorsed it as well saying, “On pensions, there was encouraging news . . . when (Mayor) Nutter signed on to Butkovitz's proposal."
